Northeast EquiWellness Happy Hat - Red Light Therapy Poll Cap for Horses
Product Details
Brand: Northeast EquiWellness

The bestselling Happy Hat, designed and sold by Northeast EquiWellness, provides targeted red and near-infrared light therapy for the poll, TMJs, and upper neck.

Horses carry tension through the poll and jaw for many reasons. It can stem from physical stress like training, riding, or old injuries—or from mental stress, including anxiety or sensitivity to new situations. Some horses are simply more prone to holding tension, which can appear as:
  • resistance flexing laterally and vertically
  • difficulty softening the jaw
  • a nervous system that's always on alert

Why this design is different

Most equine light therapy poll caps use red light only, which works well at the surface level.

The Happy Hat combines:

  • Red light (660nm) for superficial tissue
  • Near-infrared light (850nm) for deeper penetration

Near-infrared wavelengths are able to reach deeper structures and are commonly used in clinical photobiomodulation settings. Research shows near-infrared light can penetrate beyond the skull.

When red and near-infrared light are combined, they work synergistically.

  • Soothe the superficial soft tissue with red light
  • Modulate neuro-inflammation & ease cervical joint stiffness with near-infrared light

What we’re aiming to support

Light therapy is not a cure or a replacement for veterinary care.

It’s a supportive tool used to:

  • Encourage circulation
  • Reduce inflammatory load
  • Support cellular repair processes

These effects are especially relevant in horses carrying chronic tension or stress.

What you may notice during use

Many horses show clear signs of release during sessions:

  • Droopy lip
  • Eye softening or fluttering
  • Head lowering
  • Visible relaxation

Over time, many owners report:

  • Reduced reactivity
  • Improved focus
  • Easier softness through the poll and jaw

How it’s used

  • 15–20 minutes per session
  • Once daily or as needed
  • Can be used before or after work

A simple protocol guide is included to help you get started.

Design features

  • Adjustable fit for a wide range of horses
  • Acts as a red light therapy hood to cover the horse's poll and upper neck
  • Red + near-infrared modes, plus pulsing option
  • Automatic 15-minute timer
  • Rechargeable battery system (USB-C) -- no cords required during use

Can the Happy Hat help Horses with headshaking syndrome, TMJ dysfunction, or anxiety?

Yes. Poll tension is frequently linked to behavioral and performance issues. The Happy Hat is highly recommended for horses experiencing:

  • TMJ Tension & Teeth Grinding: Relaxes the tight jaw muscles that cause bracing against the bit.
  • Headshaking Syndrome: Helps soothe hypersensitive cranial nerves in the upper neck and poll area.
  • Anxiety & Spookiness: The poll area is rich in nerve endings; stimulating this zone with red light often triggers a parasympathetic (relaxation) response, causing horses to lower their heads, lick, chew, and sigh.
What is your return policy?

We offer a 30-day hassle-free return policy. Items must be in new condition and in their original packaging.

Is the Happy Hat wireless, and what is the battery life?

Yes, the Happy Hat features a completely cord-free, rechargeable battery system utilizing a modern USB-C charging port. This means no dangerous power cords or bulky battery packs dangling around your horse's face during use. The built-in battery provides approximately 1 hour of battery life (equal to about 4 full 15-minute sessions) on a single charge, making it incredibly portable for use at horse shows, in the pasture, or down the barn aisle.

What sizing or breeds does the Happy Hat fit? Will it fit a pony or a draft?

The Happy Hat features an adjustable design made from soft, flexible SBR material and includes large ear holes to accommodate a wide variety of head shapes. It is designed to fit a broad range of horses—from standard light horse breeds up to stocky cobs, warmbloods, drafts, and chunkier ponies (like Haflingers). Note: While it fits larger ponies, it is likely too big for small, fine-faced ponies like a classic Welsh pony.

What does the pulsing mode (10Hz) do, and when should I use it?

The Happy Hat features three modes: Red light only, Near-Infrared only, or Dual-mode, along with a 10Hz pulsing setting for each. While continuous wave light is excellent for general inflammation and local pain relief, the 10Hz pulsing frequency mimics natural cellular resonance. Pulsed light therapy is highly recommended when targeting cellular repair, nerve soothing, and deep tissue regeneration because it prevents the tissue from adapting to a steady stream of light, maximizing photon absorption.

How is the Happy Hat different from other equine red light poll caps on the market?

Most standard equine poll caps only utilize red light, which works exceptionally well at the surface skin level but fails to penetrate deep tissue. The Happy Hat is uniquely engineered to combine 660nm Red light (for superficial tissue circulation) with 850nm Near-Infrared (NIR) light. NIR wavelengths have the proven ability to penetrate deeper structures, including beyond the skull into the upper cervical region and deep muscle layers. When used together, they create a synergistic effect: soothing surface soft tissue while actively modulating deeper neuro-inflammation.

I was so excited to find a cap for my mare that has BOTH red light AND near-infrared. Most other caps on the market only have red light, which does not penetrate deeply enough. She loves wearing the Happy Hat, and gets very relaxed while using it. It is now a regular part of our routine. She has an old poll injury, and some tightness in her TMJ. This helps. Additionally, the customer service from NE Equiwellness surpassed all expectations, making the entire experience so easy and rewarding. Thank you very much, I highly recommend!!
