Equine back pain is a leading cause of poor performance, behavior problems, and nonspecific lameness in ridden horses. As an equine massage therapist, I have laid hands on countless horses experiencing symptoms of back soreness. In fact, it's the most common reason I'm called out. Recent research suggests that between 48-54% of sport horses exhibit some level of measurable back dysfunction. For leisure and lesson horses, those numbers are slightly higher, at 55-74% of horses.
That's a lot of horses silently living with back dysfunction. These numbers reflect the increasing emphasis that equestrians put on topline health, with complementary therapies such as massage, light, laser, and PEMF becoming more popular than ever. At the same time, these therapies keep increasing in cost.
For that reason, I created the Northeast EquiWellness GlowLine -- a collection of red & near-infrared light therapy blankets made specifically for equine topline health. Each device is thoughtfully designed to be effective while maintaining user-friendliness, so both professionals and horse owners can easily incorporate GlowLine products into their routines.
Clinical research supports the usage of red light therapy (also known as photobiomodulation) for back pain relief. This science aligns with my real-world experience, having used light therapy in my own equine massage practice. Equine red light therapy is a valuable tool in supporting equine topline health, offering practitioners and horse owners alike a non-invasive, convenient way to support healing, modulate inflammation, and soothe the pain of their beloved equines.
At Northeast EquiWellness, my GlowLine equine light therapy products honor my commitment to clinical research and transparency. Products are designed and regularly tested to uphold recognized effective power density; many red light therapy products, including most human-grade products, do not have a high-enough irradiance to penetrate effectively through the horse's hair coat and the extra-thick thoracolumbar fascia (the superficial fascia covering the majority of the horse's back). Furthermore, Northeast EquiWellness GlowLine products are tried and tested in real world equine sports therapy scenarios -- not just in the lab. Finally, they are a reflection of my desire to make equine therapy accessible to the average horse person. Let's dive into why these products exist, what makes them special, and the deciding factors that guide the design process.

The Truth About The Equine Therapy Product Industry
I am going to be brutally honest with you. You are probably overpaying for nearly everything you buy with the word "equine" on it. For some reason, that word gives big companies permission to heavily markup their products. Better yet, the equine therapy world is totally saturated with wild claims, hefty promises, and the "next big thing." Many equine therapy companies are:
intentionally hiding the technical specifications of their products, so you don't know what you're actually paying for.
making bold (and probably illegal) medical claims.
selling products for over 4x their cost price.
How do we cut through the smoke and mirrors? How do we know what to trust?
My Personal Journey
I was in the same situation when I first sought out a light therapy device to add to my equine bodywork services. Frustrated, I painstakingly combed through research and clinical reviews to discern the most effective wavelengths and irradiances (the two specifications that really matter in light therapy.) My formal education in microbiology and chemistry, paired with taking classes under an equine physiotherapist, allowed me to build a deeper understanding of what's happening on a cellular level when we use light therapy.
While science still has a long way to go, it paints a much clearer picture of what really works when it comes to equine light therapy. As it turns out... many devices do not meet effective specifications, or the specifications are simply not disclosed.
I saw this massive gap in the industry and knew I could fill it. Not only that, I could do something big for horses and their people, all over the country. I could make equine red light therapy accessible in a way it never had been before.
So, here we are. I price my products to reflect the time, materials, and labor that goes into designing, manufacturing, selling, and shipping. The end result is a fantastic, effective line of products that are easier on the bank account... because as we know, horses are already expensive enough.
GlowLine Blanket Specifications
GlowLine’s products are designed with a clear focus on clinically researched parameters, especially irradiance and wavelength. These two factors are critical in determining how effective light therapy will be for equine tissue repair and pain relief.
Irradiance refers to the power of the light delivered per unit area, measured in milliwatts per square centimeter (mW/cm²). Higher irradiance means more energy reaches the tissue, which can accelerate healing. GlowLine products output an irradiance of 115 mW/cm², well within the effective range for wearable equine light therapy.
Wavelength determines the depth of light penetration and the type of cellular response triggered. GlowLine devices use wavelengths in the red and near-infrared spectrum: 660 nanometers and 850 nanometers. Each LED contains three diodes -- a 1:2 ratio of red to near-infrared light. These wavelengths are known to stimulate mitochondrial activity, increase blood flow, and reduce inflammation.

GlowLine products provide full transparency about these specifications, allowing practitioners and horse owners to understand exactly what energy levels and wavelengths are being applied. This openness builds trust and helps customers select the right device for their specific needs.
Real-World Applications in Equine Bodywork
In my experience working with horses, light therapy is a highly effective therapy on its own, but is also a versatile tool that complements an existing wellness strategy. Here are some common scenarios where GlowLine products have proven beneficial:
Post-Exercise Recovery: After intense training or competition, horses often experience muscle soreness and stiffness. Applying GlowLine light therapy can reduce inflammation and promote faster muscle repair.
Injury Rehabilitation: For soft tissue injuries such as tendon strains or ligament sprains, targeted light therapy supports cellular regeneration and reduces pain, helping horses return to work sooner.
Chronic Conditions: Horses with arthritis or other degenerative joint issues benefit from regular light therapy sessions, which can improve joint mobility and decrease discomfort.
Wound Healing: Light therapy accelerates the healing of cuts and abrasions by stimulating collagen production and enhancing circulation in the affected area.
Enhancing Bodywork/Massage: Using GlowLine devices during bodywork sessions enhances the overall treatment effect. The light penetrates deep into tissues, complementing manual techniques that improve circulation and release muscle tension.
Benefits for Horses and Their Well-Being
The benefits of GlowLine light therapy products extend beyond immediate pain relief or injury recovery. With consistent use, horses treated with these devices often show:
Improved Mobility: Reduced inflammation and muscle tightness lead to smoother, more comfortable movement.
Enhanced Performance: Faster recovery times mean horses can train more consistently without setbacks.
Better Mental State: Pain reduction and increased comfort contribute to calmer, more relaxed behavior.
Non-Invasive Care: Light therapy offers a drug-free alternative or complement to medications, minimizing side effects.
While GlowLine blankets are used by professionals in many disciplines with great success, our focus on clinically validated parameters ensures that these benefits are supported by science, not just anecdote.

Practical Tips for Using GlowLine Light Therapy
To maximize the benefits of GlowLine products, keep these tips in mind:
Follow Recommended Treatment Times: Overexposure does not improve results and may cause discomfort.
Maintain Proper Distance: The LEDs should be positioned as close to the skin as possible. In cases of irritated or broken skin, the LEDs should be positioned 1-2 inches away, and not touching the skin.
Create a Whole Horse Treatment Plan: Use light therapy alongside massage, stretching, correct exercise, and veterinary care for best results.
Monitor Response: Track your horse’s progress and adjust treatment frequency as needed.
Ensure Clean Skin: Remove dirt and sweat from the treatment area to improve light penetration.
By integrating these practices, you can help your horse experience the full potential of light therapy.
